Recently a number of international students have accepted invitations from unknown people on internet forums to collect packages. These are advertised as an easy way to make some money, but students need to be vigilant. Many of the packages collected contain drugs or other illegal substances.
Students who collect packages for criminal networks, even unwittingly, can be subject to serious criminal charges. These charges have very serious consequences including:
Large fines
Prison time
Visa Cancellation / deportation
If students are offered the opportunity to collect a package on behalf of an unknown person, they are advised to call the Customs Hotline on 1800 06 1800. This is a free call, and information can be provided anonymously if desired.
Thank you
